It is able to catalyze the hydration of ketones and esters, which is an important reaction for the synthesis of carbocyclic nucleosides. 3-(Hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanone has been shown to react with dilithium (LiH), forming a covalent bond through its two functional groups.
