Description

Homomangiferin is an amyloid-forming polyphenolic compound. It has been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect in vivo and in vitro. The mechanism of this reaction is not yet known, but it may be due to the inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3β and protein phosphatase-1 by the compound. Homomangiferin has also been found to have anti-inflammatory effects and may inhibit restenosis after angioplasty. Analysis of homomangiferin has revealed that it is a monosodium salt with a chemical structure similar to protocatechuic acid, which is a toxic substance that causes metabolic disorders. The compound also contains flavonol glycosides, which are found in many plants, as well as hydrochloric acid.
