4-Hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) is an aldehyde that is formed as a byproduct of lipid peroxidation. It can be detected electrochemically and has been shown to be present in human tissues. 4-HNE has been identified as an oxidative adduct of proteins and nucleic acids, which may contribute to the development of haematological malignancies and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. 4-HNE also stimulates cholinergic neurons, leading to increased acetylcholine release from these cells.
