Description

Hexachlorocyclopentadiene is a chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbon that has been used as an insecticide, in the manufacture of polychloroprene, and as a solvent. It has low bioavailability, which may be due to its extensive metabolism and excretion by mammals. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene has been shown to inhibit the activity of several enzymes that are involved in the transport pathways of hexachlorocyclopentadiene, including cytochrome P450s and catalases. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene also induces mutations in human serum erythrocytes and has been shown to cause liver cancer in rats. This chemical can be degraded by wastewater treatment plants, but will require light exposure for this process to occur. The biological half-life of hexachlorocyclopentadiene is about 4 days.
