11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one is an anthracene derivative with a dihydrobenzofluorene core. It is a planar, aromatic heterocycle that contains two oxygenated functional groups. 11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one is synthesized by the Diels-Alder reaction between 1,2-cyclohexadiene and maleic anhydride followed by oxidation of the resulting dihydrobenzofluorene with potassium permanganate. The compound has been shown to be carcinogenic in fibroblast cells in vitro and in vivo when injected into mice. The diameter of the compound was found to be 5.6 angstroms by X-ray crystallography analysis.
