- Heptadecan-9-ol
9-Heptadecanol is a long-chain fatty acid that has been shown to be an acceptor in heterojunction photovoltaic devices. It has been synthesized from benzothiadiazole and a long-chain alcohol, with the structure activity relationship between these two compounds determining the optical and physical properties of 9-heptadecanol. The synthesis of 9-heptadecanol can be achieved by reacting benzothiadiazole with an ethanol extract of coconut oil, giving a high yield of product. 9-Heptadecanol is also stereogenic, with the configuration at carbon atom C9 being R or S. This property influences the activation energy for photoinduced electron transfer from this compound to other acceptors in solar cells.
