D,L-Homoserine is a homoserine molecule that can be used to inactivate enzymes. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of wild-type strain aspartokinase and polymerase chain reactions. D,L-homoserine has also been found to be effective at treating wastewater containing malonic acid and aspartic acid. The mechanism of action for this compound is thought to be due to its ability to form a cyclic peptide with the amino acid methionine, which can bind to the active site of an enzyme and inactivate it by steric hindrance. D,L-homoserine also has antimicrobial properties against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis.
