11-Hydroxy canrenone is a metabolite of the drug canrenoic acid. It is an 11-hydroxylated derivative of canrenoic acid that has been shown to be cytotoxic against corneal epithelium cells in culture. The mechanism behind this activity is not known. 11-Hydroxy canrenone has also been shown to inhibit the replication of viruses, such as influenza virus and coronavirus, in cell culture. 11-Hydroxy canrenone was found to induce the production of lipolytic enzymes and polymers in human protein. It also inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to DNA at high concentrations. 11-Hydroxy canrenone may be a potential drug candidate for use in antiviral therapy or for treatment of viral infections after corneal surgery.
