Carvedilol is a drug that belongs to the group of β-blockers. It selectively blocks β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors, which are responsible for the activation of adenyl cyclase and the production of cAMP. Carvedilol has been shown to improve respiratory control in patients with reactive airway disease. It also decreases cardiac workload by reducing cardiac oxygen demand, thereby decreasing myocardial oxygen consumption and increasing coronary blood flow. Carvedilol also reduces cardiovascular events such as congestive heart failure, restenosis (e.g., after angioplasty), and atherosclerosis progression in coronary arteries. The mechanism of these effects may be due to its ability to inhibit oxidative injury to mitochondria by blocking mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibiting mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, thereby preventing mitochondrial membrane depolarization and cytochrome c release. Carvedilol has also been shown to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood by increasing the synthesis
