Description

3a-Hydroxy pravastatin lactone is a nitrile that is used as a remedy. It has been shown to decrease the levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides in hyperlipemic animals. This drug also inhibits microbial growth, with the exception of gram-positive bacteria. 3a-Hydroxy pravastatin lactone is metabolized in the liver by transformation to 3a-hydroxypravastatin, which is then excreted in bile and urine. The transformation process can be inhibited by sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid. 3a-Hydroxy pravastatin lactone has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties (e.g., inhibition of COX activity) and can inhibit arteriosclerosis due to its ability to inhibit lipoprotein lipase and hepatic HMG CoA reductase activity.
