3-Hydroxyglutaric acid dimethyl ester (3HGDE) is a synthetic compound that is used in the synthesis of enantiopure compounds. It is synthesized through a borohydride reduction of 3-hydroxybutanoic acid, followed by the desymmetrization of the resulting alcohol with sodium methoxide. This process can be carried out in two ways: kinetic or immobilization. The first method involves the use of a catalyst such as acetic acid and ammonium chloride to reduce the reaction time, while immobilization uses an enzyme such as lipase to catalyze. 3HGDE has been shown to be a good substrate for monoethyl hydrogenation, which can be used to produce hydroxybutanoate and l-tartaric acid.
