Heptaldehyde is a colorless liquid with a pleasant, sweet odor. It is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride and other chemicals. In addition, it can be an important biomarker in environmental studies. Heptaldehyde is produced by the reaction of ethyl decanoate with water vapor or methyl ethyl ketone. It is also an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which may be due to its hydroxyl group and acetyl group.
