Description

b-Hydroxypyruvic acid is a chemical compound that binds to the caproic acid reductase enzyme and inhibits its activity. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to a decrease in malonic acid, which is an important precursor for the biosynthesis of lipids and other cellular components. Caproic acid reductase catalyzes the conversion of b-hydroxypyruvate to acetaldehyde, which is then converted to acetyl-CoA by aldehyde dehydrogenase. The b-hydroxypyruvate binding site on caproic acid reductase has been identified by structural analysis and modeling. This site is conserved among many different organisms, including humans, giving hope that this drug may be effective in treating metabolic disorders.
