4-Hexen-3-one is a carbonyl group that can be found in Aurantifolia, a strain of bacteria. It is produced as a reaction product and has been shown to have the unsaturated ketones of ethyl formate. The mechanism for the formation of 4-hexen-3-one from these two compounds has been studied by means of solid phase microextraction (SPME) and kinetic studies. This study showed that 4-hexen-3-one is formed as an intermediate in the dehydration process and that β-unsaturated ketones are formed as a byproduct.
4-Hexen-3-one can also be used industrially to produce hexane, which is used to make gasoline additives. This chemical reacts with hydrogen gas under homogeneous conditions at high temperature and pressure to produce hexane and water vapor.
