4-Hydroxyvalerophenone is a hydrophobic organic compound that is used in the synthesis of other organic compounds. 4HVP has been found to be a selective and efficient catalyst for the epoxidation of alkenes. It also has anti-cancer properties, as it inhibits cancer cell growth by inhibiting protein translation and inducing apoptosis. The hydration of 4HVP was studied using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A study on choline, which is a component of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, showed that 4HVP hydrolyzes spontaneously at pH 7.4 to form 4-hydroxypropiophenone and water. The reaction was shown to be reversible with high selectivity, with no side products observed in the reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis.
