2-Hydroxy-4-methylvaleric acid is an organic compound that is a component of some natural products. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of isoflavonoids, which are found in a variety of plants. 2-Hydroxy-4-methylvaleric acid can be obtained from the degradation of cholic acid or ursodeoxycholic acid, which are bile acids. 2-Hydroxy-4-methylvaleric acid has been shown to have antiinflammatory effects, which may be due to its inhibition of protease activity and cyclic peptide production. This compound also inhibits the growth of certain types of bacteria by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis and sodium citrate production.
