N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone is a fatty alcohol that is used as a solvent and plasticizer. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids by inhibiting the enzyme, hepg2, in mammalian cell culture. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone also enhances the rate of dehydration of polymers. This effect can be attributed to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the polymer backbone, which is known to enhance the rate of polymer degradation. The optimal reaction temperature for N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-pyrrolidone is at pH 2 and at polymer concentration of 1%.
