1-Hydroxy anthraquinone is an anthraquinone derivative that has been shown to be a model system for the palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction. It is also used as a reagent in wastewater treatment, as it can effectively remove organic contaminants such as phenols, amines, and sulfides. 1-Hydroxy anthraquinone is also effective for bowel disease, and has been shown to have protonated forms of this compound that can inhibit carcinogenic potential by binding to DNA. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been used to detect genotoxic activity in human skin cells treated with 1-hydroxy anthraquinone. This natural compound has not been found to be genotoxic in mice or rats. In addition, 1-hydroxy anthraquinone has been shown to have properties that would make it a good candidate for use in energy metabolism studies.
