It also inhibits the efflux pump of cancer cells, which prevents the drug from being pumped out of the cell, and thus increases its concentration inside the cell. 2-Hydroxychalcone is structurally similar to epidermal growth factor (EGF). The nitrogen atoms are important for its activity as they can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules and help stabilize the protein's conformation. 2-Hydroxychalcone has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in vitro and in vivo, with a particular effect on prostate cancer cells. It also inhibits tumor growth by reducing the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) levels.
