Description

6-Hydroxychrysene is a major metabolite of naphthalene, which is an environmental pollutant. It is produced by the oxidation of naphthalene with oxygen in the presence of a metal catalyst, such as iron or copper. 6-Hydroxychrysene has been shown to be a potential biomarker for chronic exposure to naphthalene in humans and animals. This compound can also be detected in urine samples. 6-Hydroxychrysene has been shown to have carcinogenic effects on v79 cells and rat liver microsomes. The oxidative dna adducts may be important in understanding the toxicity of naphthalene because it leads to DNA damage and mutations, which may play a role in tumor formation.
