DL-Homophenylalanine is an amino acid that is found in the pancreas and is structurally similar to phenylalanine. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme glutathione reductase, which catalyzes reduction of oxidized forms of glutathione. DL-Homophenylalanine inhibits protein synthesis by blocking the enzymatic activity of RNA polymerase II, an enzyme responsible for transcription and replication. DL-Homophenylalanine has also been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of drug binding to proteins by preventing access of drugs to their receptor sites on enzymes. The structural analysis of DL-homophenylalanine has been determined using X-ray crystallography.
