- D-His(p-Me)-OHH-N-p-methyl-D-histidine
Methylhistidine is a metabolite that is synthesized in the liver and kidney by the enzyme histidine N-methyltransferase. Methylhistidine is produced when an amino acid with a methyl group, such as methionine, reacts with histidine. It is also metabolized to glycine and formaldehyde. The tautomer of methylhistidine is His(3-Me)-OH. Histidine plays an important role in the synthesis of proteins and polyamines. Methylhistidine levels are increased during periods of tissue growth, such as puberty or pregnancy. This metabolite has been found in human urine and serum samples.END>
