2-(Hydroxymethyl)-15-crown 5-ether is an alkali metal, which has a cavity in the center of the molecule. The cavity is capable of binding with intramolecular hydrogen. This type of hydrogen bonding may lead to stabilization of the molecule and kinetic effects due to the electron transfer. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)-15-crown 5-ether is an archetypal example of a crown ether, which are polyethers containing a crown ether group that stabilizes the cation within its cavity. Crown ethers are used for their potential use in catalysis, molecular recognition, and as ligands in asymmetric synthesis. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)-15-crown 5-ether can be used in place of other alkene molecules in certain reactions due to its terminal hydroxyl group and this residue can be removed by hydrolysis with base.
