4-Hydroxy-4'-nitrobiphenyl is a bifunctional molecule that can be used to reduce nitrate pollution. This compound has a high catalytic activity for hydroxylase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 4-hydroxy-4'-nitrobiphenyl to 4-hydroxybiphenyl. The compound also has the ability to photocatalyze biphenyl and aspergillus parasiticus. It can be used to treat environmental pollution with nitrate and other pollutants. Sensors have been developed using this compound that are sensitive enough to detect as little as 1 nanomolar of pollutant in water.
