Description

N-(Hydroxymethyl)benzamide is a protonated amide that catalyzes the conversion of benzoic acid to benzaldehyde with an initial rate-limiting step involving hydroxide ion. The reaction mechanism of N-(Hydroxymethyl)benzamide involves an electrophilic substitution at the benzylic carbon. This chemical is found in plants, animals, and bacteria and is used as a precursor for other drugs. N-(Hydroxymethyl)benzamide has been shown to have benzodiazepine receptor-binding properties, which may be due to its ability to bind in the active site residues of the receptor. N-(Hydroxymethyl)benzamide also binds spontaneously to water molecules, which can be attributed to its acidic functional group.
