It has a potent antibacterial activity and inhibits lipid peroxidation. 2'-Hydroxy-4'-methoxypropiophenone has been shown to inhibit the growth of gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. It also inhibits the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2, which are proinflammatory mediators. This compound is active against anaerobic bacteria such as Clostridium difficile, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis. 2'-Hydroxy-4'-methoxypropiophenone also exhibits antioxidant activity by inhibiting free radical generation from α-tocopherol.
