Hosenkoside A is a saponin that has been used in health care products. It has shown potent cytotoxic activity against malignant melanoma cells, du145, and colorectal adenocarcinoma cells. The cytotoxicity of Hosenkoside A may be due to its ability to cause cell death through the induction of apoptosis. Hosenkoside A also inhibits the production of enzymes involved in polyamine synthesis, which are required for DNA replication and cell division. Hosenkoside A has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells by inhibiting protein synthesis. Hosenkoside A can be detected using mass spectrometric detection or bioassay.
