Hydroprotopine is a non-protein amino acid that was first isolated from the root of the plant Pterocarpus marsupium. Hydroprotopine has been shown to be an inhibitor of light emission and can be used in tissue culture to inhibit the growth of cells. It is also believed that hydroprotopine may have anti-inflammatory effects, as it has been shown to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 8 (IL8). This compound also inhibits toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is a protein involved in inflammatory signaling. In addition, hydroprotopine has been shown to induce apoptotic signaling by inhibiting phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K) activity. Hydroprotopine may also have therapeutic effects against pancreatitis, due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis.
