Mitragynine is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid that is found in the leaves of the plant Mitragyna speciosa. It binds to opioid receptors, which are G-protein coupled receptors located on the cell membrane. Mitragynine has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and receptor activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the binding of ATP. This drug also has a pharmacokinetic profile that includes rapid absorption and distribution, with low systemic clearance and a long elimination half-life. Mitragynine has been shown to inhibit recombinant cytochrome P450 enzymes in vitro, as well as rat liver microsomes. Studies have indicated that mitragynine does not produce any physiological effects or symptoms when administered at doses up to 300mg/kg in rats. The drug interactions have not yet been fully investigated, but it is thought that mitragynine may interact with other drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors and clon
