2-Hydrazinobenzothiazole is a compound with antimicrobial activity. It has been found to have an optimum concentration of 5 mM in complex matrices and is usually active at concentrations as low as 0.1 mM. 2-Hydrazinobenzothiazole is a coumarin derivative and exhibits antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans. The mechanism of action involves the formation of hydrogen bonds between the aromatic groups in the molecule and various amino acids on the bacterial cell membrane. This leads to leakage of cellular contents from the bacteria and ultimately death. 2-Hydrazinobenzothiazole also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes in E. coli cells. The fluorescence probe used for detection can be excited at wavelengths of 350 nm or 365 nm.br
