Heptafluoroiodobutane is a chemical compound that is used as a cross-coupling agent in organic synthesis. It is produced by the reaction of chloroform with magnesium and carbon tetrachloride, followed by treatment with iodine. The resulting product can be purified by vacuum distillation or by passing it through a solution of magnesium carbonate before it is passed through an uv lamp to remove any excess chlorine. Heptafluoroiodobutane has been shown to stabilize oxetane, which is a reactive intermediate in organic reactions, and can also be used for the stabilization of other reactive intermediates such as chlorides, nitriles, and sulfides.
