Imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine is a heterocyclic compound that has been shown to be a potent antimicrobial agent. It has also been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against cervical cancer cells in vitro and can be used as a chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine is structurally similar to coumarin derivatives, which are known to be effective against gram-positive bacteria and fungi. This molecule binds to the reactive site of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV and inhibits their function, causing DNA damage. The methylene group on the 2 position of imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine is an active methylene group that reacts with halides or alkylthio groups.
