Isovalerylchloride is a non-nucleoside inhibitor that has anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits the production of inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins by inhibiting the activity of phospholipase A2, which is responsible for the hydrolysis of membrane phospholipids. Isovalerylchloride has been shown to be effective in models of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. The compound is synthesized from phenoxazine and phosphorus pentachloride. The compound can be oxidized to its corresponding acid, isovaleric acid, by reaction with aqueous hydrochloric acid or an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene or toluene. This product also forms a film-forming polymer when reacted with trifluoroacetic acid and a fatty acid such as oleic acid.
