- 5-Iodo-2,6-Dioxo-1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyrimidine-4-Carboxylic Acid
5-Iodoorotic acid is a purine derivative that inhibits the synthesis of proteins in mammalian cells. It forms stable complexes with uridine and sephadex g-100, which can be used to separate and identify uridine. 5-Iodoorotic acid also has an inhibitory effect on the enzyme uridine phosphorylase, which converts uridine into cytosine. This compound has been shown to have a helical structure, and is biosynthesized from tryptophan through a dehydrogenase reaction. 5-Iodoorotic acid is excreted in the urine and plasma concentrations can be monitored by gel chromatography.
5-Iodoorotic acid inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the ribosome and preventing peptide bond formation. This causes cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis.
