Description

5-(4-Iodophenyl)pentanoic acid is a diagnostic agent that is used in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for the diagnosis of hepatitis. It is metabolized by fatty acid amide hydrolase, and then excreted in urine. This drug can be synthesized from adenosine, which is derived from ATP, as a positron-emitting radiolabeled compound. The SPECT scan can be used to diagnose various diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy. 5-(4-Iodophenyl)pentanoic acid has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the enzyme lipoxygenase, which leads to the inhibition of the production of leukotrienes and prostaglandins.
