Isocarboxazid is a drug used in the treatment of depression and Parkinson's disease. It has been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that breaks down dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Isocarboxazid also inhibits thp-1 cells in vitro, which are a cell line derived from human leukemia cells. Isocarboxazid's clinical properties have been investigated using a rat striatal model and in humans with Parkinson's disease. The pharmacological activity of isocarboxazid has been investigated in vitro by measuring the binding of estradiol benzoate to estrogen receptors in human liver tissue and in vivo by evaluating its effects on symptoms of depression. The drug may be useful for treating symptoms of depression due to its ability to inhibit monoamine oxidase and increase levels of dopamine.
