Isobutylene is a colorless gas at room temperature, with a boiling point of -10.6°C. It is the simplest alkene and it is the simplest organic molecule that contains only carbon-carbon double bonds. Isobutylene reacts with water to form an acid complex in which one atom of hydrogen has been replaced by an oxygen atom. The hydroxyl group (-OH) makes the isobutylene molecule more acidic than other alkanes and alkenes, as well as being less soluble in water. Isobutylene can also react with another isobutylene molecule to produce a methyl ethyl radical via a redox cycle. This radical can then react with another isobutylene molecule to produce an ethane molecule and a methyl radical, or it can react with an oxygen molecule to create water and formaldehyde. Methanol has been shown to be the most reactive substrate for this reaction, followed by ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol
