Imazaquin is a herbicide that is used to control perennial ryegrass in pastures. It is the active ingredient in several herbicides, including Imazapyr, Imazamox and Imazethapyr. This drug inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids by inhibiting acetolactate synthase in plants. The mechanism of action for imazaquin was first proposed by Dr. Dwayne Savage from the University of Guelph, Canada. Imazaquin has been shown to be genotoxic and cause mutations in cells cultured from animals treated with the drug. These mutations are induced by damage to DNA caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated as a consequence of imazaquin’s inhibition of fatty acid synthesis.
