Vitamin D2 is an analog of vitamin D3 and has a four-ringed structure that is not found in any other natural form of vitamin D. It can be synthesized by the irradiation of ergosterol with ultraviolet light or by the addition of propionyl chloride to ergocalciferol. Vitamin D2 is also stereochemically active, meaning it can exist as either (R)-(-) or (S)-(+). This property is important for its physiological function because it regulates calcium metabolism. The (R)-(-) form of vitamin D2 has been shown to increase blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is needed for maintaining bone health.
