Icarisid I is a pro-apoptotic protein that has been shown to inhibit the expression of the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. Icarisid I also induces apoptosis by regulating the downstream signaling pathways, such as caspase activation and mitochondrial membrane permeability. The natural compounds chlorogenic acids exhibit a matrix effect on icariside. This molecule has been shown to have toxicity studies in mice with no observable side effects. In addition, Icarisid I has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis in mice models. Icarisid I can be used for drug discovery and development.
