Lithium aluminium hydride is a chemical reagent that is used in the asymmetric synthesis of biologically active compounds. It is an effective inhibitor for DPP-IV, which is an enzyme that degrades incretins and thereby contributes to the progression of diseases such as diabetes. Lithium aluminium hydride also inhibits epidermal growth factor (EGF) and infectious diseases caused by Influenza A virus and HIV, respectively, by preventing receptor binding. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors in animal models. Lithium aluminium hydride reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen gas and anhydrous sodium chloride. The primary use for lithium aluminium hydride is as a catalyst for organic reactions, but it can also be used as a catalyst for hydrogenation reactions.
