Lercanidipine is a drug that belongs to the class of calcium channel blockers. It lowers blood pressure by blocking the influx of calcium ions into cells, thereby decreasing the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and reducing vascular tone. Lercanidipine hydrochloride has been shown to be effective at lowering blood pressure in patients with various cardiac diseases. Lercanidipine also decreases myocardial oxygen demand and improves ventricular function in congestive heart failure, which may be due to its effects on energy metabolism. This drug has been shown to reduce matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity in human serum and inhibit the growth of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to decreased vascular permeability and reduced edema.
