Description

Longistylin C is a plant extract that has an inhibitory effect on the mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be due to its ability to inhibit glutamate-induced opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Longistylin C also inhibits the activity of enzymes that are involved in protein synthesis and lipid metabolism, such as protein kinase C, glycogen synthase kinase 3β, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase. Recent studies have shown that Longistylin C can enhance HIV infection by inhibiting the binding of HIV to human epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on the cell surface. This compound has also been shown to inhibit atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in mice by reducing inflammation in vascular endothelial cells. Longistylin C also inhibits apoptosis in breast cancer cells through transcriptional regulation and activation of the apoptosis pathway.
