Licarin A is a homolog of protocatechuic acid and has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. It binds to the hydroxyl group of the ATP synthase, which is required for the production of ATP. Licarin A inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and increases the level of reactive oxygen species, leading to cell death. The effect on mitochondria may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in mitochondria. Licarin A also has an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) production in HL-60 cells and mutant melanoma cells.
