Methyl acrylate is an organic compound that reacts with sodium carbonate to form methyl ethyl acrylate and trifluoroacetic acid. Methyl acrylate is a colorless liquid with a characteristic odor. It is used in the production of polymers and plastics, as well as in the manufacture of coatings, adhesives, and sealants. The reaction mechanism for the formation of methyl acrylate involves an addition-elimination reaction between hydroxyl group (-OH) and trifluoroacetic acid (-CF3COOH). This reaction is exothermic and may be catalyzed by metal ions such as Cu2+ or Fe3+. The structural analysis of this compound has been completed using GC-MS. Methyl acrylate has been shown to have genotoxic properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit transfer reactions such as DNA synthesis and protein synthesis at high concentrations.
