Methyl thioacetonitrile (MTAN) is an acetate extract that has a low energy, hydroxyl group, and a fluorine atom. MTAN's nucleophilic attack on the carbon-hydrogen bond of butyronitrile causes the release of hydrogen cyanide and methyl acetate. The kinetic energy of MTAN is determined by the number of molecules present in a given volume and its ph optimum. The growth rate for MTAN is expressed as a function of time. Preparative methods often employ solid phase microextraction to isolate MTAN from other compounds in solution.
