2-Methyl-5-phenylbenzoxazole is a synthetic compound that belongs to the class of imidazole derivatives. It has been shown to be cytotoxic in vitro against various cancer cell lines, including prostate, breast and colon cancer. The mechanism of action is not yet known. 2-Methyl-5-phenylbenzoxazole has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 activity and induce retinoic acid production by human keratinocytes. This drug also inhibits DNA synthesis in cells by binding to the pyrimidine nucleotide pool, thereby preventing cellular replication. 2-Methyl-5-phenylbenzoxazole is an endogenous metabolite that can be synthesized from carboxyalkylpyrroles through a series of reactions involving aniline and retinol or retinaldehyde.
