5-Methoxypsoralen is a natural compound that has been shown to have inhibitory properties against a variety of human pathogens. 5-Methoxypsoralen inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi by binding to DNA, preventing transcription and replication. It also interferes with the synthesis of proteins by inhibiting the enzyme RNA polymerase in cells. This compound has been shown to have genotoxic activity in vitro, as well as to bind to human α1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) and radiation. 5-Methoxypsoralen can be synthesized from 3-o-caffeoylquinic acid and imperatorin, which are natural compounds found in plants such as Angelica Dahurica.
