2-(4-Methylphenoxy)acetohydrazide is a benzene derivative that has been shown to be a fluorescent and luminescent compound. It has a dihedral angle of about 180°. The fluorescence and absorption maxima are at about 360 nm and 500 nm, respectively. 2-(4-Methylphenoxy)acetohydrazide produces coumarin derivatives when irradiated with light in the wavelength range from 300 to 400 nm. This compound is also capable of emitting light when excited with long wavelength ultraviolet light or by electron beams. The optical properties of this molecule may be due to its chalcone structure, which has been shown to produce emission in the visible spectrum as well as in the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
