Morpholine is a heterocyclic organic compound consisting of a morpholine ring with an amine substituent at the 3-position. This compound is a colorless liquid with a strong, sweet odor. It is mainly used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial products. Morpholine can be synthesized by reacting piperazine with copper(II) acetate in water and ethanol to produce methyl 3-morpholin-4-ylpropanoate. The yield of this reaction is about 75%. The product has a melting point of about 120°C and boiling point of about 220°C. The impurities found in the product are β-amino acid (1%), morpholine (2%), and physicochemical impurities (5%).
